Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Grave marker requirements in New Jersey are set by individual cemeteries, not by a statewide standard. A marker appropriate for one NJ cemetery may fail the requirements of another just miles away. Common variables include permitted marker dimensions (length, width, thickness), acceptable materials (granite, bronze, bronze-on-granite), required surface finishes, and height restrictions in flat-grave sections. NJ Grave Markers contacts each cemetery directly before designing any marker, confirming the written policy and incorporating those requirements into the design from the outset. This is the most reliable way to ensure that a family's chosen memorial can actually be placed at their loved one's grave.

Foundation Requirements

Foundation requirements are the part of grave marker installation families most often overlook. In New Jersey, most cemeteries require a concrete foundation beneath any ground-level marker, reaching below the frost line — typically 36 inches in northern counties. Without this foundation, a marker will shift or tilt during the state's freeze-thaw cycles. NJ Grave Markers's installation team handles all foundation work — preparation, pouring, and curing — as part of every installation. The complete process, from foundation through final placement, is managed by our team.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Religious cemetery requirements in New Jersey can add additional constraints to marker design and installation. Catholic, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox, and other denominational grounds across Morris, Essex, and Bergen Counties may specify that only certain religious symbols may appear on markers, or that inscription formats follow the cemetery's established convention. Our team contacts faith-affiliated cemetery offices directly to review these requirements before any design work begins, so the marker we produce meets both the cemetery's standards and the family's intentions.

General Grave Markers

NJ Grave Markers produces grave markers in granite, bronze, and bronze-on-granite combinations — the three material forms that cover the full range of New Jersey cemetery requirements and family preferences. Granite grave markers are the most common in NJ: cut from American-made granite in flat and flush configurations, hand-carved in our Morris County workshop, and sized to each cemetery's permitted dimensions. Absolute Black, Silver Gray, Balmoral Red, and Indian Mahogany granites are all available. Bronze grave markers — cast from American-made alloy and hand-finished in our workshop — provide a warm, aging-gold tone that develops a dignified patina over time. Bronze is widely used in veterans' sections and Catholic cemeteries throughout New Jersey. Bronze-on-granite combination markers pair the visual weight and color of a polished granite base with the detail-capturing quality of a cast bronze plaque face — offering both materials' advantages in a single memorial. All NJ Grave Markers grave markers are cemetery-compliant by design, sized and specified after reviewing the receiving cemetery's written policy. As veteran and military marker specialists, we produce companion markers for veterans interred alongside VA-provided government headstones, and flat and flush markers that satisfy the grade-level requirements at many NJ cemeteries. Pillow markers, with their slightly rounded top surfaces, are available for older NJ cemeteries that permit them.

Bronze + Granite Options

The choice between granite, bronze, and bronze-on-granite for a New Jersey grave marker depends on the cemetery's requirements, the family's aesthetic preferences, and the complexity of the inscription. Granite is durable, low-maintenance, and available in a range of colors — all American-made, quarried domestically. Bronze offers warm tonal qualities and the ability to capture fine portrait and lettering detail in relief. Bronze-on-granite combinations leverage both materials, with the granite providing stability and visual weight and the bronze plaque providing inscription quality. NJ Grave Markers's designers will review each option with families during the consultation, with physical samples and finished examples available in our Morris County showroom.

Custom Design Process

The design process at NJ Grave Markers begins with clarity about the cemetery and the family's vision, then proceeds through a scaled proof, family approval, and fabrication. Every marker is designed specifically for the family that commissions it and the cemetery where it will be installed — there are no standard packages imposed. Consultations are conducted at our Morris County showroom or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish. Once a design is approved, the marker is produced in our own workshop and installed by our own team, with no outsourcing of any step in the process.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Step one is consultation. A NJ Grave Markers designer meets with the family at our Morris County showroom or by telephone in English, Russian, or Polish. We learn what the family wants to express and what cemetery the marker will be placed at. Step two is cemetery verification. We contact the cemetery and review their current grave marker policy — material requirements, permitted dimensions, flush-marker rules, foundation specifications, and faith-specific requirements if applicable. Step three is the design proof. Our team prepares a scaled marker layout for family review and approval. No fabrication begins until the family confirms the design. Step four is fabrication. The approved grave marker is produced in our Morris County workshop from American-made granite or bronze. Our artisans hand-carve or hand-finish the lettering and imagery, checking every element against the approved proof. Step five is quality review. The completed marker is inspected against the approved design in full. Over 80 years of hand-crafted grave markers in New Jersey inform this standard. Step six is installation. Our team delivers the marker to the cemetery, prepares the concrete foundation, and installs the marker level and compliant with the cemetery's requirements.
